Statement from the RSS following the sinking of the MV Barima in Guyana

STATEMENT FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE REGIONAL SECURITY SYSTEM, REAR ADMIRAL ERRINGTON SHURLAND, ON THE SINKING OF THE MV BARIMA IN GUYANA

The senior management and staff of the Regional Security System (RSS) extends its deepest condolences to the Government and people of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, and especially to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives as a result of the tragic capsising and sinking of the MV Barima.

This heartbreaking incident has deeply saddened the entire Caribbean community.

During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers remain with the families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones, those who have suffered loss, and everyone impacted by this tragedy.

In keeping with its mandate to support Member States during emergencies and crises, the RSS deployed resources and personnel to assist with search and rescue operations over the weekend. Working in close collaboration with the Government of Guyana and national response agencies, the RSS remains committed to providing all necessary support as recovery efforts continue.

The RSS will continue to stand alongside the people of Guyana and will maintain its support for the operation for as long as is required. We remain hopeful that the ongoing efforts will bring comfort and answers to the affected families.

As a regional family, we reaffirm our commitment to working together in moments of adversity, demonstrating that our greatest strength lies in unity, cooperation, and shared responsibility.

Rear Admiral Errington Shurland
Executive Director
