STATEMENT FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE REGIONAL SECURITY SYSTEM, REAR ADMIRAL ERRINGTON SHURLAND, ON THE PASSING OF BARBADOS NATIONAL HERO THE RIGHT EXCELLENT SIR GARFIELD ST. AUBURN SOBERS
The Regional
Security System (RSS) joins the Government and people of Barbados, the people
of the Caribbean, and the global sporting community in mourning the passing of
The Right Excellent Sir Garfield St. Auburn Sobers, affectionately known to
generations simply as Sir Garry.
A National Hero of Barbados and universally regarded as one of the
greatest cricketers the world has ever known, Sir Garry's remarkable life was
defined by excellence, humility, discipline and an unwavering commitment to
representing Barbados and the West Indies with distinction.
Before his legendary cricketing career, Sir Garry served as a Police Band Cadet. Although he
never became a police officer, his association with the then Barbados Police
Force played a significant role in his development as a cricketer. At just 15
years old, he was identified by Inspector Wilfred Farmer, captain of the Police
First Division cricket team in the Barbados Cricket League, and was offered a
place in the Police squad for the 1951–52 season. Competing alongside and
against some of the island's finest cricketers helped sharpen his extraordinary
talent, and paved the way for his selection to the Barbados team, his
debut for the West Indies, and ultimately one of the most celebrated careers in
the history of international sport.
Sir Garry’s accomplishments on the field are etched permanently into
cricketing history, including his unforgettable feat of striking six sixes in a
single over on August 31, 1968, at St. Helen's Ground in Swansea, Wales. Yet,
Sir Garry's greatest legacy extends far beyond records and statistics.
He embodied the very qualities that continue to define the
Caribbean spirit—courage, resilience, integrity, perseverance and the
relentless pursuit of excellence. Through his achievements and exemplary
character, he became a unifying figure whose influence transcended sport,
inspiring generations across the Caribbean and earning the admiration and
respect of people throughout the world.
As an institution founded on regional cooperation and collective
strength, the RSS recognises Sir Garry as more than a sporting icon. He
represented the very best of our region and demonstrated what can be achieved
through talent, discipline, hard work and an enduring commitment to one's
people.
At this time of profound loss, the RSS extends its deepest
condolences to Sir Garry's family, friends, former teammates, the Government
and people of the
Republic of Barbados, Cricket West Indies, and
the millions across the globe whose lives he enriched through his extraordinary
legacy.
While Sir Garry has completed his final innings, his influence
will forever remain woven into the history of Barbados, the Caribbean and world
sport. His life will continue to inspire present and future generations to
pursue excellence, serve with humility, and represent in every sphere with honour and distinction.
