Course Participants and Instructors of the RSS Close Protection Officer Course 2026 


Twenty-four law enforcement officers have successfully completed the Regional Security System Training Institute’s Close Protection Officers’ Course.

The training, held at the Sir Wright F. George Police Academy in Antigua and Barbuda formed part of the RSS’s ongoing commitment to strengthening regional security capabilities and enhancing professional standards among law enforcement and security personnel.

The course, held from July 6 through 17, brought together participants from the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, the Immigration Department, and the Customs Department, as well as regional counterparts from Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The training was coordinated by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Cecil Watson, Staff Officer Training at the RSS Headquarters, and facilitated by RSS instructors Sergeant Gladstone Worrell, Retired Senior Superintendent Margaret Stephen, and Retired Warrant Officer Class 1 Christopher Blenman.


Participants engaged in one of the many training courses. 



The intensive programme was designed to enhance participants' knowledge, skills, and practical competencies in close protection operations. Through a combination of theoretical instruction, practical exercises, and scenario-based training, participants were exposed to key aspects of modern close protection duties and the responsibilities of a professional Protection Officer.

Among the areas covered during the training were:

·       Principles and attributes of an effective Protection Officer;

·       Working effectively with VIPs and external security teams;

·       Venue points, venue checks, and venue protection;

·       Route planning and contingency planning; and

·       Practical approaches to managing security challenges in close protection operations.

 

The course also provided participants with opportunities to strengthen their ability to plan and execute protective operations while promoting effective communication, teamwork, situational awareness, and sound decision-making.

The training served as a precursor to the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which is scheduled to be held in Antigua and Barbuda. The course therefore provided a timely opportunity to further develop the capabilities required to support the security and protection arrangements associated with major regional and international events.

In addition to enhancing operational readiness, the course contributed to strengthening regional partnerships and fostering greater cooperation and professional exchange among law enforcement and security agencies across the Caribbean.
