New Year's Statement from Executive Director, Regional Security System, Rear Admiral Errington Shurland

Executive Director, RSS, Rear Admiral Errington Shurland.

As the Regional Security System looks ahead to 2026, we do so with renewed resolve and a clear focus on our core mandate: safeguarding the people, sovereignty, and stability of our eight Member States and the wider Caribbean region.

The evolving regional and hemispheric security landscape demands vigilance, adaptability, and strengthened cooperation. In the year ahead, the RSS will continue to prioritise the eradication of illicit drugs and firearms trafficking, recognising these threats as among the most destabilising forces facing our societies. Through enhanced intelligence-sharing, joint operations, and deeper collaboration with regional and international partners, we remain committed to disrupting criminal networks and reducing the flow of illegal weapons and narcotics into and across our region.

Equally important is our ongoing commitment to improving the effectiveness and responsiveness of law enforcement services within our Member States. In 2026, the RSS will intensify its support for capacity-building, specialised training, and operational readiness, ensuring that our law enforcement agencies are equipped to meet both traditional and emerging security challenges.

We are also mindful of the broader geopolitical environment, including developments in Venezuela and other territories that have the potential to impact regional stability. While remaining respectful of national sovereignty and diplomatic processes, the RSS will continue to monitor these situations closely, strengthen contingency planning, and work alongside Member States to ensure preparedness, border security, and the protection of our citizens.

The future of the RSS is one of deeper integration, strategic foresight, and unwavering commitment to collective security. Together with our Member States and partners, we will continue to build a safer, more resilient Caribbean—one where cooperation prevails over crime and security underpins sustainable development.

In 2026 and beyond, the Regional Security System stands firm in its mission: united in purpose, proactive in action, and steadfast in service to the region we are entrusted to protect.
