Statement From Regional Maritime Officer, RSS, Lt. (CG) Rolerick Sobers
As we observe World Maritime Day 2025, our
attention turns to the health and care of the marine environment, and the many
ways our oceans sustain life and livelihood. From trade and commerce to travel,
tourism, and recreation, countless activities depend on ocean-going vessels and
the safe, sustainable use of our seas.
How we use this precious resource will determine the
true return on investment for individuals, corporations, and countries alike.
While most maritime activities are pursued for noble purposes, we must always
remain mindful of the safety of mariners and the wider community of ocean
users. Security across the maritime commons is critical to ensuring that people
can carry out their legitimate activities safely, free from harassment, and
without harm to their livelihoods.
The Regional Security System Maritime
Operations Department proudly supports the many initiatives, policies, and
frameworks designed to ensure the safety, security, and sustainable use of the
marine environment for present and future generations. These include, but are
not limited to:
· Conventions set by the International
Organisations (IMO) and other bodies aimed at
encouraging compliance and best practices in shipping and
ocean use.
·
National Laws and Regulations to govern
activities taking place in their sovereign space.
·
National and Regional Maritime Security
Strategies.
·
National and Regional Ocean Governance
Policies.
·
National and Regional Plans of Action
for the governance and sustainable use of our oceans, seas and adjoining
environs (mangroves etc.).
·
Safety, Security and Environmental
Policies to regulate the actions of sea fearers, and the general conduct of
marine traffic.
As Small Island Developing States (SIDS), we look confidently toward a brighter future – one that embraces the opportunities of the Blue Economy and the immense potential that lies beneath the ocean waves. We therefore call on all users of the marine space to take seriously their obligation to uphold industry best practices and to adopt sustainable approaches that safeguard this vital resource.
Happy
World Maritime Day!
